The yearbook theme represents our school as it stands this
year. Themes are important because they inspire the way each page in the
yearbook is laid out and because they embody what this school year is all about.
So I’m starting to work on this whole theme thing by taking
a look at our current school year and what has been a part of it (what events,
classes memorable moments have so far made this school year different) and look
ahead to what’s coming up. After that I’ll write down a list of adjectives or
short blurbs that I would use to describe them. This list will be used later on
by either directly using them in my theme or as inspiration for the theme.
One of the harder parts of choosing a theme is picking something
that will be applicable throughout the entire school year and not to just this
season or here and now. Otherwise by the end of the school year I might be
tempted to change my theme which means going back and redoing all the pages I’ve
already done or having two themes in the book which has a tendency to make a yearbook
feel cluttered and confusing.
The upside to homeschooling and choosing a theme is that I
don’t need to choose a broad topic theme that applies to the entire student body
of 1,000. Instead all we need to do is find a theme that just applies to our
unique school of two and I plan on our theme reflecting what this year makes
our special little school exactly that.
